Happy April!

Published on 27 March 2013 | Local Church | Julia Pickerill

On Sunday, 7 April at de Rode Hoed, join us for Quo Vadis Café! Quo Vadis Café is not a normal Meeting Point; instead, we’re taking a Sunday morning to be intentional about creating space for those who are interested in spirituality, but are not followers of Jesus. The purpose of Quo Vadis is to give you an easy opportunity to invite a friend, family member or colleague to de Rode Hoed to participate in a spiritual conversation. Quo Vadis is an interactive event and will feature music, theatre, poetry, dance & conversation around the topic of ‘finding rest’. read more »

24 | Lent

Published on 27 February 2013 | Local Church | Huub Waalewijn

We are half-way through the season of Lent. Honestly speaking, Lent arrived before I knew what happened. The oliebollenkraam (wintery donut place) was still hot when carnaval sounded the start of the Lent season.   Ash Wednesday passed before I knew and there it was: Lent! I quickly went into conclave to decide how to fast this year, and came up with a semi decision to watch a little less TV :). It led me to the question: why do we celebrate Lent? Where did those 40 days come from and where do they go? read more »

Why are we doing a Sermon Series on the Holy Spirit?

Published on 25 May 2012 | Local Church | Julia Pickerill

Just saying the words: “the Holy Spirit”, one can feel slightly strange. In our culture, most people believe no longer either in Holiness or in the Spiritual… we might as well be talking about the tooth fairy or Zwarte Piet. So why are we doing a sermon series at Meeting Point on the Holy Spirit?

For just the above reason. The Spirit of God, we belive as Christians, is the presence of Christ made available to us. It is the universal presence of the Creator God, living along side of us, inside of us, connecting our hearts, minds, spirits and lives to the Father and the Son.  It is the Spirit of God who heals, not us. And we can do nothing without Him. Jesus relied on the power of the Holy Spirit for His ministry. The disciples of Jesus relied on the power of the Holy Spirit for their lives and mission. And, today, we must also reply upon the Holy Spirit, for we can do nothing without Him.

Who do you say I am?

Two Sundays ago at Meeting Point, we started a new sermon series called "Who do you say I am?". We'll be talking for the next several weeks about the "I AM" statements of Jesus... and looking at the book of John for insight into how Jesus actually presented himself to the people around him.

As many of you heard at church, the I AM statements of Jesus (ie: "I am the way"....) are rooted in the I AM statements of God in the Old Testament. In other words, when the historic man called Jesus used that language, He was deliberately identifying himself (a young, unknown Jewish man from a small tribe and an unremarkable family) as the God of the universe. And as offensive or crazy as that claim was to many religious people, the words and actions of Jesus started a spiritual movement that has changed the world. read more »

Celebrating God's Extravagant Grace

Published on 21 July 2011 | Local Church | Julia Pickerill

A common practice in scripture finds the people of God taking time to pause, reflect on God's grace in our lives, and respond with worship to the things He's doing in our midst. Often we read stories in the Old Testiment where God's people build alters of stones to comemerate miracles of God so that they would remind generation after generation of what God had done in the lives of His people. read more »
